PSYCHOTHERAPY + COACHING

What’s the difference between therapy and coaching?

Psychotherapy and coaching are two distinct approaches to helping folx achieve personal growth, but they differ in their focus and methodology.

Psychotherapy is a form of mental health care that is focused on addressing and resolving challenges that are present in your life that may be rooted in past experiences or traumas.

Coaching, on the other hand, is focused on helping folx achieve a variety of goals using intentional processes to help you identify and clarify your goals, develop strategies for achieving them, and provide supportive and encouraging accountability along the way.

Basic

Trauma therapy for young people + adults

Read more below about how we can work together to address the complex challenges that arise as a result of traumatic stress, attachment trauma, intergenerational trauma, adversity, and dissociation so that you can be more present and connected with yourself, your body, your relationships and the world. Building a strong, reverent and collaborative therapeutic relationship will be central in our work. I will draw on a variety of modalities and interventions to support you in your healing.

Intermediate

Trauma, Parts Work, nervous system regulation, + embodiment coaching

You can learn more below about my coaching services, but in short coaching work tends to be short- to mid-term in length and focuses on specific goals or challenges. We identify your goals and develop a plan for achieving them. In this work I can support you in understanding trauma and its impact on the nervous system and body, help you develop a plan for your mental health care and treatment (as well as identify resources), engage in specific Parts Work activities to increase self awareness and compassion, explore Polyvagal Theory in practice so you can feel more regulated and present, as well as draw on a variety of somatic and embodiment exercises and practices for you to bring into you life. In our coaching work together I will learn some about your history, but that will not be the direct focus of our work.

More about my approach + training

  • I work with adults of all ages and specialize in the treatment of the complex challenges that arise as a result of traumatic stress, attachment trauma, intergenerational and historical trauma, and dissociation.

One of my areas of focus is working with folks with Dissociative Identity Disorder and/or who have developed ways of moving through their lives and the world using a variety of dissociative coping strategies. This (and all of my work) begins with understanding your parts, how they came to be and what each of them may need and want in our work together. There is no one-size-fits-all way to understand our inner landscapes and systems, so we will work together to ensure that I understand the multiple goals and needs you have for your life and our work together.

Additionally, I have experience working with both active duty military and veterans as well as their families in a variety of settings. The unique experiences of military life can be great sources of resilience as well as challenge and trauma. I have worked with military-connected individuals and families in the VA system, in a domestic abuse agency, in community settings as well as in workshop and retreat settings. I take a culturally-informed and humble approach to this work and will work with you to honor this part of your identity and experience in our work together.

  • I work with children ages four through adolescence. My work takes into consideration that each child’s needs are unique and treatment should be tailored accordingly. I work collaboratively with parents and caregivers, teachers and other important adults in a child’s life to offer more comprehensive treatment and to ensure that each child is understood holistically. Therapy can be done individually, dyadically and/or as a family, and incorporates play therapy, sand tray, EMDR, Sensory Motor Arousal Regulation Treatment (SMART) and the Attachment Regulation and Competency Framework (ARC). I am also available for IEP meetings, and school and case consultation as needed on a case by case basis.

  • My approach to trauma therapy is deeply rooted in the belief that our behaviors, emotions and bodies are profound storytellers and that we can work together to learn about the many ways that the stories being told help us understand how you have adapted to and coped with your lived experiences. There are many narratives in our families and cultures of origin that pathologize certain behaviors and ways of being. I work systemically and in my work with clients to deconstruct those narratives and explore what a more expansive and compassionate understanding of your adaptation and survival can look like. One of the many ways that we can explore together is how your inner landscape developed to survive and adapt to your external landscapes. We have many parts of us that have developed and grown in ways that protect the wounds we carry as well as identities that we hold that have not been welcome in our families and communities. Every part of you is welcome in our work together.

  • My deep commitment to ongoing learning and growth has brought me into a great breadth and depth of experiential learning environments. I completed graduate studies at both the joint Graduate School of Social Work at the University of St. Thomas and St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN as well as the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, CA. Additionally I completed two esteemed fellowships to deepen my experience and expand my offerings, one of which was at the Trauma Center in Boston, MA where I worked alongside Bessel van der Kolk and an incredible group of committed psychotherapists, researchers and innovators. I have completed dozens of trainings and certifications including in EMDR, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Sensory Motor Arousal Regulation Treatment, ARC, Trauma Sensitive Yoga, IFS, Parts Work, psychodrama, neurofeedback and many, many more.

I have practiced and held roles in community mental health settings, domestic violence/interpersonal violence agencies, the VA and other military settings and private practice. Additionally I have conducted research, contributed to trauma literature and continue to collaborate with innovative groups, projects and individuals to be a part of ongoing efforts to evolve mental health care.

As someone who believes passionately in the need to participate in decolonizing work within the mental health field and beyond, I partake in groups, trainings and affinity groups to continue deconstructing my own power and privilege and to learn the ways in which I can bring decolonizing practices into my work with clients.

  • Our identities are multiple and intersectional, which means that each of your identities and the ways in which they intersect with and influence one another will be honored and held with compassion and curiosity. As a queer-identifying person, I know the importance both personally and professionally of working with an affirming therapist who holds that our lived experiences are entirely unique. Additionally, I understand the need for connection around sharing some aspect of identity or identities to create more comfort and ease in this work. Some areas that are common to explore in our work together may include identity-related trauma (often rooted in our families and cultures of origin and/or religion), exploration of gender and/or sexual identity and expression, relationships (monogamous or non-monogamous), coming out, transitioning, support for gender-affirming healthcare and procedures, seeking and finding belonging in community, navigating cis- and heteronormative societal and cultural spaces, processing internalized queer/homo/bi/trans-phobias, and much more.

  • Together we will map out a plan for our work together to specifically attend to your goals. My coaching services can integrate things such as psychoeducation about trauma, finding resources and engaging in treatment planning for your own care, parts work, somatic and embodiment practices as well as nervous system regulation. Let’s connect to explore how my coaching services can support you in improving your life and relationships.
