Our individual and collective healing requires that we hold a transformative understanding of trauma and adversity.

My work sits at the intersections of trauma, healing justice and transformative change. It is fueled by a centering of the body and nervous system as well as a deep understanding of the power of liberation, community and the collective.

Mariah Rooney (she/they) has been working for more than a decade with individuals, groups and systems to heal and transform the impacts of trauma and adversity. Her work spans from psychotherapy with young people and adults to teaching in university and organizational settings as well as consulting with a diverse array of systems from community mental health, to the film industry and the federal government.

The wide array of her work and experience allows her to take a uniquely collaborative approach, informed by years of experience in adapting to the needs of those she works with. Her clinical work has included domestic and interpersonal violence, LGBTQIA+ folx, military and veteran populations, professional and outdoor athletes, changemakers and those in the social impact space and more. She has committed to deep personal and professional studies, including completing two intensive fellowships, one of which was at the internationally-renown Trauma Center in Boston, MA. Her ongoing journey to study with elders and leaders in the trauma space allows her to take a highly integrative and adaptive approach to her work.

Mariah’s consulting work has been expansive and highly varied. She was a part of a team that developed and delivered the first ever primary violence prevention program for the Department of Defense (DOD) in collaboration with the American Institutes for Research and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Her attuned approach allows her to work with systems of all sizes and has brought her into relationship with community mental health agencies around the US to support trauma-informed (TI) care and transformational work, as well as with incredible filmmaking teams wishing to take a TI approach to their work.

In her commitment to education and embodied learning, she has taught graduate social work students in university settings. In these roles she has developed well-loved courses on trauma and trauma treatment (a student favorite is her Parts Work course). Additionally she leads trainings and workshops privately and publicly focused on a variety of trauma-related topics. She has been invited to speak at conferences, be a part of panels, webinars and podcasts. She continues her research work in partnership with researchers from around the US including at Boston University, Harvard, Barry University and the New School.

A passion project of Mariah’s is the co-founding of Trauma Informed Weight Lifting. A radically fun and innovative nonprofit program that is now a part of the Center for Trauma and Embodiment at the Justice Resource Institute.
